Strategic Gaps

The last mile was still disconnected

Happy Meal Prep helped streamline kitchen operations, but dispatch and delivery remained fragmented. Businesses sending hundreds of orders in tight weekly windows faced a difficult choice between costly couriers and in-house fleets coordinated through spreadsheets and messages.

Two user groups needed different kinds of clarity: dispatchers needed an overview of the whole operation, while drivers needed a focused interface that worked in the field.

Design Logic

Research where the work happens

I led ride-along research with drivers, documenting practical constraints such as screen glare and handling bulk packages. A service blueprint mapped the handoffs between kitchen staff, dispatchers and drivers.

Give each role the right view

The dispatcher command center uses a management-by-exception approach. On-time deliveries recede, while active issues receive attention. The driver experience prioritizes high contrast and one-thumb interaction.

Close the data loop

Delivery photos trigger customer messages and update the kitchen dashboard. Routing and smart batching were developed in close collaboration with engineering, connecting the planning interface to the real delivery workflow.

Impact

The original case study reports a 30% reduction in delivery costs per mile for onboarded kitchens and a 98% on-time delivery rate. These are source-reported figures; measurement windows are not specified.

Reflection

This expansion reinforced the value of designing a connected ecosystem. Improving the tools behind the scenes can improve the experience all the way through to the customer’s doorstep.
